Elementary School

Al-Qalam Academy uses an integrated approach to learning and its own special curriculum. The grade-level Virginia Standards of Learning & FAIRFAX PUBLIC SCHOOLS also serve as a guide for the curriculum, which offers a more comprehensive perspective on the core subjects as well as Arabic, the Quran, Islamic Studies, physical education, and art. Guidelines, materials, and professional development are provided by our program to help teachers make informed decisions about the education of their students.

Our objective is to ensure that every elementary school student receives an education that is fair, demanding, and pertinent. We are dedicated to teaching the full child through interesting experiences and practical learning, in addition to the reading, writing, and math instruction that is essential for success in life. Additionally, we focus on the character development of the child  through programs that focus on caring, respectful relationships, problem-solving, and decision making making, and conflict resolution. It is our belief that every child deserves to experience excellent  teaching and deep learning that meets her/his needs in every classroom, every single day.

Al-Qalam Academy’s Elementary School program follows an integrated approach to learning, combining the school’s own specialized curriculum with the Virginia Standards of Learning and the Fairfax County Public Schools guidelines. These standards help ensure that our curriculum is both rigorous and comprehensive, while allowing us to address the unique educational goals and values of the Academy.

In addition to core academic subjects—language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies—students receive instruction in Arabic, Quran, Islamic Studies, physical education, and art. This well-rounded structure allows students to develop strong academic foundations while also nurturing cultural, spiritual, and creative growth.

The program is supported by clear instructional guidelines, carefully selected materials, and ongoing professional development for teachers. This support equips educators to make informed instructional decisions, tailor lessons to the needs of their students, and ensure that learning experiences are effective and engaging.

Our objective at the elementary level is to provide every student with an education that is equitable, challenging, and relevant. While academic achievement in reading, writing, and mathematics is prioritized, we also place strong emphasis on experiential and practical learning that deepens understanding and encourages curiosity.

Character development is an essential part of the curriculum. Through structured programs, students build caring and respectful relationships, develop problem-solving and decision-making skills, and learn constructive approaches to conflict resolution. We believe that every child deserves consistent, high-quality teaching and meaningful learning experiences that address their academic, social, and emotional needs—every classroom, every day.
